On the evening of Saturday January 16th we are celebrating the fifth anniversary of the Lone Glen writing, art, and performance series! We are so excited to welcome poets Gillian Conoley, Donna de la Perriere, and Angela Hume, as well as visual artist Zina Al-Shurki. Join us at 7:45pm for a night of revelry steeped in these artists’ images. We’re at 3132 Harrison Street in Oakland: Look for the sign that will take you to the backyard and into the brooding, heated basement. No entrance fee, but please bring something such as a friend, a beverage, a snack, or a kind word to share. Curated by Alexandra Mattraw and Owen Rosenboom, Lone Glen is a quarterly series dedicated to promoting more community, support, and inspiration among creators of all art forms.

Zina Al-Shurki, visual artist

Zina Al-Shukri was born in 1978 in Baghdad, Iraq. She currently lives in Oakland and works in San Francisco, California. Al-Shukri is an emerging artist whose exhibition history includes the Berkeley Art Museum and Pacific Film Archive, Patricia Sweetow Gallery, San Francisco, Jack Hanley Gallery, San Francisco, and Pulliam Deffenbach Gallery, Portland, Oregon. She received a BA from the University of Arkansas at Little Rock in 2006 and an MFA from the California College of the Arts in 2009.

Gillian Conoley, poet

Gillian Conoley’s most recent book, PEACE, with Omnidawn, was a 2014 Los Angeles Times Book Award finalist and a Stand Out Collection of the Academy of American Poets. Her translations of Henri Michaux with City Lights (2014), THOUSAND TIMES BROKEN: THREE BOOKS BY HENRI MICHAUX, was named one of the top 10 books of poetry in 2014 by Publishers’ Weekly. She is Professor of English and Poet in Residence at Sonoma State a University, where she edits Volt.

Donna de la Perriere, poet

Donna de la Perrière is the author of True Crime (Talisman House, 2009) and Saint Erasure (Talisman House, 2010), a 2011 NCIBA Book of the Year Award finalist. The recipient of a 2009 Fund for Poetry Award, she teaches in the MFA and undergraduate creative writing programs at California College of the Arts and San Francisco State University, and curates the Bay Area Poetry Marathon reading series in San Francisco.

Her work has appeared in Kindergarde: Avant Garde Poems, Plays, Stories, and Songs for Children (Black Radish Books, 2013), No Gender: Reflections on the Life and Work of kari edwards (Litmus Press, 2009) and Bay Poetics (Faux Press, 2006), as well as journals such as American Letters and Commentary, Colorado Review, Denver Quarterly, Five Fingers Review, Interim, New American Writing, and Volt. Her chapbook, “First Love,” is part of the Poetry Center Chapbook Exchange collection at San Francisco State University. She is currently working on a third full-length manuscript, Second Person. Angela Hume, poet

Angela Hume is a poet and critic living in Oakland, California. She is the author of Middle Time, forthcoming from Omnidawn (April 2016), and the chapbooks Melos (Projective Industries, 2015), The Middle (Omnidawn, 2013) and Second Story of Your Body (Portable Press at Yo-Yo Labs, 2011). She has articles in or forthcoming in Contemporary Literature, ISLE: Interdisciplinary Studies in Literature and Environment, and Jacket2. Since 2014, she has co-curated Hearts Desire, the reading series of the Bay Area Public School, and served on the board of directors for Small Press Traffic, a San Francisco-based literary arts organization. Next year, she will file her dissertation on 20th and 21st century “lyric” poetry, women’s writing, and ecological consciousness.

She is the author of Rust or Go Missing (Cleveland State University Poetry Center, 2011) and several chapbooks, including The Haptic Cold (Ugly Duckling Presse, 2013). Her poems have appeared recently in Green Humanities, A Public Space, and Jubilat. Steven Seidenberg Steven Seidenberg is the author of Itch (RAW ArT Press, 2014), Null Set (Spooky Actions Books, 2014) and Songs of Surrender (Gummi-Geliebter Verlag, 2013). He co-edits pallaksch.pallaksch. (Instance Press), an annual anthology of new poetry, is a member of Right Window artist’s collective, and curates poetry events and publications at The Lab in San Francisco.

Tonal Masher is the solo project of Aram Shelton on saxophone with processing via Max/MSP.  His music combines acoustics and electronics via resonant feedback harnessed by alternate saxophone fingerings and a custom made Max/MSP software patch.

Aram Shelton is a saxophonist, improviser and electronic musician from Oakland, California, where the projects Tonal Masher, the Broken Trap Ensemble, and the Sound Quartet represent his music. He is connected to Chicago (where he lived from 1999 to 2005) through his Quartet, the cooperative sextet Fast Citizens and Jason Adasiewicz’ Rolldown. His playing and music are available through Delmark, Clean Feed, Cuneiform, 482 Music, Locust Music, MultiKulti, Edgetone, and his own Singlespeed Music. Since 2001, Aram Shelton has been using computer based live sampling via Max/MSP in a variety of settings to process acoustic instruments. He received his MFA in Electronic Music from Mills College, and his 2007 thesis focused on the use of live sampling to extend and rearrange the sounds of acoustic instruments in a live performance setting.  He has taught  at the Oakland School for the Arts and has led improvisation and electroacoustic music workshops in San Francisco, at UC Santa Cruz, Evergreen State University and the jazz school in Luzern (CH). In 2002 he formed the duo Grey Ghost (482 Music) with the drummer Johnathan Crawford. The Wire found their music to be a “focused symbiosis of breath and circuitry”.  From 2010 to 2012 he joined Michael Coleman and Alex Vittum in the trio Stratic. All About Jazz compared their music to “a waking dream memory of music”. In the past year, Shelton has focused on solo electroacoustic music that is based on explorations of the resonant feedback frequencies that are unique to the saxophone.  Due to his ongoing fascination with sonic rearrangement, Shelton has chosen the anagram Tonal Masher as an apt moniker.

Mark Clifford is a vibraphonist, composer, and percussionist living in Oakland, CA. A sought after performer and improviser, Mark is equally involved in free improvisation, new music, jazz, and indie music, and is a part of multiple projects in the Bay Area and around the country. His performance experience spans worldwide, and he has had the honor of playing alongside an array of wonderful musicians including Tatsuya Nakatani, Jeff Parker, Wu Fei, Moe! Staiano, Ron Miles, So Percussion, Scott Amendola, Aram Shelton, Greg Gizbert, Paul Riola, Danny Meyer, Colin Stranahan, Paul Romaine, and Josh Berman. Since moving to the Bay Area in 2009, Mark has recieved multiple commissions for new music , including music for the New Keys Ensemble, Samantha Stone’s Dance Company, and an original score for the short film Sprinkles.

Norton, 2005). Recent work appears in The BafflerFunk & Wag, and the PEN Poetry Series. She received an M.S. in Theoretical Linguistics from Georgetown University and an M.F.A. in Poetry from New York University.  She’s the recipient of fellowships from Montalvo Arts Center, Headlands, Hedgebrook, and the University of Arizona Poetry Center. Poet, writer, and collage artist Linda Norton is the author of THE PUBLIC GARDENS: POEMS AND HISTORY (Pressed Wafer, 2011; with an introduction by Fanny Howe), a finalist for an LA Times Book Prize in 2012. Her work appears in four anthologies and her collages are on the covers of several books. Norton is currently completing two manuscripts: DARK WHITE (non-fiction) and COLORATURA. Chapters and poems from these works in progress have appeared or are forthcoming in the Fish Anthology (Cork, Ireland), Colorado Review, Zen Monster, Ambush, Eleven Eleven, and Berkeley Poetry Review. She recently returned from Ireland where her collages are on exhibit at the Dock Arts Center. She is a recipient of a 2014 Creative Work Fund grant. Celebrating the spirit of collaboration at our eleventh Lone Glen, we are thrilled to host poets Joshua Clover and Juliana Spahr on the evening of Saturday, August 16th. Join us at 6:30 in our garden to hear both their individual works and a new, co-written poem. We will welcome you with libations and snacks, but please feel free to contribute! Joshua Clover’s next book of poetry, Red Epic, will be published in 2015, and his book on political struggle, Of Riot, in 2016. He has collaborated on poetry, critical writing, and conferences with Chris Nealon, Chris Chen, Aaron Benanav, Annie McClanahan, Louis Schwartz, Jasper Bernes, and Juliana Spahr; with the lattermost two, he edits Commune Editions. He is author of two previous books of poetry and two of cultural theory, a longtime columnist and Editorial Board member at Film Quarterly, and a columnist at The Nation.

Juliana Spahr edits the book series Chain Links with Jena Osman and the collectively funded Subpress with nineteen other people and Commune Editions with Joshua Clover and Jasper Bernes. With David Buuck she wrote Army of Lovers, a book about two friends who are writers in a time of war and ecological collapse and also the symposium Beyond Oakland. She has edited books with Stephanie Young A Megaphone: Some Enactments, Some Numbers, and Some Essays about the Continued Usefulness of Crotchless-pants-and-a-machine-gun Feminism (Chain Links, 2011), with Joan Retallack Poetry & Pedagogy: the Challenge of the Contemporary (Palgrave, 2006), and with Claudia Rankine American Women Poets in the 21st Century (Wesleyan U P, 2002).

Lone Glen 10:  Classical Folk Night

Celebrating our tenth Lone Glen, we are honored to host guitarist and singer-songwriter, Marc Hufnagl, plus the dynamic violin-viola duet, Joseph and Raphael Gold. Please join us on Saturday, April 26th at 7:45 pm for an evening steeped in music.  Hufnagl inspires audiences with his rich voice and narrative laced songs that warm a room with a nostalgic sound akin to Joni Mitchell and Jeff Buckley.  The Gold duet plays with gorgeous intensity and movement that we hope will sweep you off your feet!  This is a special night that encompasses our first Lone Glen musical performances. Marc Hufnagl, singer-songwriter, guitarist 

Just for the record, Marc Hufnagl can’t read a lick of music. Back in high school, he taught himself to play guitar and piano so he could give voice to the tuneful messages that were already bubbling under the surface. In college, he became sidetracked from music and traveled an “over two decade creative sojourn” as a modern dance choreographer with three National Endowment for the Arts fellowships to his credit and a body of dance works. But the enduring power of his first love, music, drew him back. Ten years ago, he returned to writing music, tapping into a swelling reservoir of songs about his life. “Lunden,” his first CD, will be released this spring. He and his partner Juerg live in Oakland and Switzerland and also curate a salon performance series.

Raphael Gold, violist

A native of the Bay Area, Raphael plays extensively throughout the region in several orchestras and chamber groups.  He has participated in several international music festivals, including Avila, Spain, Tirol, Austria, Managua, Nicaragua, Guanajuato, Mexico, and New York.  Raphael lived in Yucatan state for several years where he was a member of the Yucatan Symphony Orchestra, touring extensively throughout Mexico.  While in Yucatan, he performed chamber music in correctional facilities, retirement homes, and church-run rehabilitation centers in an effort to bring classical music to disadvantaged communities.

Joseph Gold, violinist

Joseph Gold grew up in Southern California, the son of Russian émigré parents.  He began his violin studies at the age of eight.  A graduate of the University of Southern California, he had the privilege of being coached by the great Jascha Heifetz.  All-Around Musician & Proponent of the Romantic Revival Mr. Gold, who makes his home in San Francisco, is an enthusiastic proponent of the “romantic revival” of Nineteenth Century violin music.  He is an ardent author and lecturer on his two favorite virtuoso composer-performers, Paganini and Sarasate.  Mr. Gold’s numerous publications include his book, Paganini’s Art of Violin Playing, as well as many transcriptions and original compositions.  Although steeped in the tradition of the Romantic style, Joseph Gold’s programs are not restricted to the Nineteenth Century. He is an all-around musician who has premiered and championed many Twentieth Century compositions while maintaining a Baroque repertoire as large as many Baroque specialists.  Joseph Gold’s warm personality and perfectly timed humor make him a popular guest artist on University campuses. He is eminently qualified as an “Artist in Residence” and holds a Master’s Degree as well as three teaching credentials.
